When twelve-year-olds Gertrude and Tristan travel from an orphanage in Britannia to Appleton Farm in Oakvale to escape the bombings, little do they know that they will soon stumble on a sylvan secret. A strange door carved into the trunk of a tree leads them to Hollow Woods, the land of the elves, where they find new friends, fresh skills and a shadowy enemy who is intent on destroying everything. Can Gertrude and Tristan discover the truth and protect Hollow Woods before it’s too late?

Wendy Haynes channels the spirit of Enid Blyton in this first book from the Saving Hollow Woods series, with shades of The Magic Faraway Tree within Wendy’s whimsical tale. Kids aged eight to twelve years will be captivated by the adventurous storyline, where the wonder of nature entwines like a vine around a mystery in a magical world. The scattering of spelling and punctuation flaws may snag their attention, but youngsters will forgive and forget as they become immersed in the flow of the fantastical plot.

Starring two strong and independent protagonists, Wendy’s first book for middle-grade readers offers a promising start to what is sure to become a beloved series. Saving Hollow Woods will inspire and intrigue readers in equal measure, enticing them back into the elven world again and again.
