Creative Kids Tales a Success

After being made COVID redundant from her full-time job in July 2020 and with the prospect of securing another full-time job virtually non-existent, with COVID crippling offices around the globe, Georgie Donaghey refocussed her energies to turn her 10-year ‘hobby’, Creative Kids Tales, into a full-time business.

‘CKT is my heart and soul, but as anyone in the Arts would know, rarely do authors make enough to sustain a full-time living, especially with a large family to support.’

With author school visits no longer an option. Georgie engaged the services of a business coach. The exercise helped her to see things differently. With Creative Kids Tales already an industry recognised site, Georgie capitalised on her strong foundations. After six months of planning, Creative Kids Tales underwent a major change.

Some of the new features CKT launched in celebration of their 10-year milestone:

·      New branding

·      New website

·      New Membership package

New Services Include:

·      CKT Writer's Hub

·      CKT Writing Academy

·      Workshops with top industry professionals

·      CKT Publishing

·      Creative Kids Tales Writers' Festival

·      More online critique groups

‘We take our commitment in assisting the authors of tomorrow, very seriously. Creative Kids Tales has always been a no pressure, community-minded home for creatives. We have paved the way for many aspiring authors and have helped over 100 authors realise their publication dream.’

Influential people in the industry were starting to really take notice of the changes at CKT. One such person was fellow author Jackie French AM. As ex-Australian Children's Laureate and Senior Australian of the Year, Jackie knows the importance of nurturing emerging authors. A long-time supporter of Creative Kids Tales, Jackie reached out to Georgie offering her seven exclusive workshops.

‘Offering our audience workshops with one of this country’s best storytellers, was a dream come true.’

The CKT Writing Academy Workshops offer content that is not offered through any other writing organisation. Also attracted to the new platform are top industry professionals – Wendy Orr, Jacqueline Harvey, and Susanne Gervay.

With COVID completely reshaping how authors connect with audiences, this year’s Creative Kids Tales Writers’ Festival was pivoted into an online event. Almost two hundred participants joined in the online, two-day event, to hear speakers like Treehouse series author Andy Griffiths, current children’s Laureate, Ursula Dubosarsky, Nickelodeon’s Tina Harris (Lah-Lah) and a star-studded line-up of award-winning authors.

Twelve months from her redundancy, Georgie continues to break new ground in the children’s writing industry by launching the CKT Speakers Agency, which helps match children’s authors and illustrators with school events around the country.

Early this year, Georgie won a grant through Create NSW to launch CKT Publishing. Their first picture book, Tortoise’s Home, will be released in February 2022.

In August 2021, Georgie was announced as a finalist in the 2021 AusMumpreneur Awards in four categories. NSW/ACT - Business Pivot Award, Creative Entrepreneur, Author Award and Women's Business School Student of the Year.

She has also been nominated for president of the NSW Society of Women Writers.

‘I feel as if I have earned my stripes and can totally own my success. I don’t believe I would be where I am if I had skipped steps. It’s important to turn a negative into a positive. There is nothing stopping you from turning your passion into a business.’

Georgie Donaghey is an award-winning Author, Mentor, Educator and Speaker. Her picture books Lulu, Clover’s Big Ideas and In the Shadow of an Elephant appear on the Premier’s Reading Challenge, Kinderling Kids Radio, Kindergo and the Virgin and Qantas inflight entertainment channels.

In the Shadow of an Elephant

In The Shadow of an Elephant is a perfect collaboration of words and pictures that creates something magical. A picture book, it not only touches the heart but delivers a tender message about love and friendship showing that the circle of friendship never breaks.

One terrible night Lualani is orphaned and separated from her herd. Left alone in the world, she is changed forever. As fate would have it, on the edge of the African Savanna she is befriended by Jabari. It takes time and patience but Lualani learns to trust once again. A life-long friendship unfolds and takes us through the circle of life.

The language in this story sings and the emotions of the story are so delightfully played out with the illustrations’ tender use of dark and light with touches of colour. The characters are drawn into the readers’ hearts and each plays their part well in the story.

What I particularly like about this story is that is shows that no matter what happens to you in life, friendship will always make your heart sing. Each of us has our own life journey, but isn’t it all the sweeter with a friend?

Schools and libraries will appreciate this story as it fits into the school curriculum.

In the Shadow of an Elephant by Georgie Donaghey

After losing my mother a couple of years ago to Lewey Body Dementia and Cancer, I wanted to write about death.  Rather than focus on death more a celebration of life.

While researching, I came across the beautiful Lualeni. Her story inspired me.

In the Shadow of an Elephant (Little Pink Dogs) is a gentle story about sorrow and determination, of friendship between boy and elephant set on the African Savanna. Through life’s challenges, they will embrace the joys of dancing in the shadow of an elephant.

Within 24 hours of submitting my manuscript to a publisher, it had been accepted. As you know this is rare in the Australian children’s writing industry. To further celebrate this story’s success, the book sold out before going to print. In the Shadow of an Elephant will be released in April at the Creative Kids Tales Writers’ Festival.

From the moment I read about Lualeni, I felt a connection to her. I particularly enjoyed reading about the recent birth of Lualeni’s calf. My excitement grew upon discovering the young one had been named Lulu. My first book released in 2016 was called Lulu.

So, drawn to Lualeni after this discovery, I decided to foster her through the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. I hope In the Shadow of an Elephant can educate and help raise awareness about poaching with the Australian reading public.

In the Shadow of an Elephant is illustrated by Sandra Severgnini.

Georgie Donaghey on Clover’s BIG Ideas

Being the smallest in the paddock isn’t easy. Clover is always being teased. When three naughty lambs go too far, Clover and her big ideas step in. Discover how Clover shows being little makes her more determined and clever than they could ever imagine.

This is the background to Clover's Big Ideas, Georgie Donaghey's latest picture book, illustrated by Emma Middleton and published by Little Pink Dogs. Here Georgie is interviewed by Di Bates of Buzz Words.

Please tell us about yourself.
I am a full-time working mother with three gorgeous kids, all at various stages of their life. I began writing from a young age, even winning an award in the Sunday Telegraph at the age of eight, for a poem about the dentist.
Life took many turns over the years and my writing was pushed aside while I explored other paths.
After the birth of my first child, 19 years ago, I felt inspired to play with words again and began writing for children. That’s where I have called home ever since. My little writing nook is littered with story ideas, my computer bulging with WIP’s and even more ideas.
My first steps in the world of children’s publishing were with the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) where I served as President of the Sutherland Shire Sub-branch for three years.
It was during my time with the CBCA, I discovered there were many emerging children's authors that needed a voice. They needed somewhere they could share their work, network with others and utilise tools and resources to assist them on their journey to publication.
In 2011, as a commitment to help others and with the assistance of my husband, Creative Kids Tales was born. Now an industry recognised site, CKT has become a valuable resource for Australian emerging children’s authors.
In 2013, I stretched my creative wings and The Author's Shelf hit the airwaves on 2SSR. After a year of chatting with authors like Captain Underpants author; Dav Pilkey, Jackie French, McLeod’s Daughters creator; Posie Graeme-Evans, Andy Griffiths, Susanne Gervay, Kate Forsyth, Belinda Murrell and other extraordinarily talented authors, I decided to put The Author’s Shelf ‘on the shelf’ and focus on my writing. It paid off.
By 2014, my dreams of becoming a published author became a reality; I signed my first contract. In 2015, my first picture book was published with Dragon Tales Publishing. In 2016 I signed my second contract with Little Pink Dog Books for Clover’s BIG Ideas, illustrated by Emma Middleton. Lulu was also re-released this year through Wombat Books. I’ve also re-signed with Little Pink Dog Books to publish my next title, In the Shadow of an Elephant due out in 2018.

How did the idea for Clover’s BIG Ideas come about?                                                Clover’s BIG Ideas will speak to all who have endured teasing at some time in their life. I wanted to share that it doesn’t matter how we look on the outside, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Clover showed through her passion, determination, courage and of course her BIG ideas, that by standing up to those naughty little lambs she is powerful.

Who is your target audience for this book?                                                                This book is suited for 3-7-year-olds. I find of the different age groups I share this story with, each takes away something different. The younger kids want Angus to crush the bullies and the older kids like the antics of the three naughty sheep. No matter what the age, they can all relate to Clover. It’s great to be able to share the subtle message of how the words we choose to use on a daily basis can either hurt or heal.

The audiences also love Emma’s illustrations. I am so happy with the added level Emma has brought to this story. Her illustrations are simply divine and tell a story of their own.  The classic style will definitely resonate with lovers of picture books past.

What aspects did you find challenging about this book?                                              This book hit many firsts for me. The partnering with Emma Middleton, my first publication with Little Pink Dog Books and the wonderful friendship I now have with editor, Emma Cameron.
In my goody bag from a NSW Writers’ Centre Kids and YA Festival a few years ago was a voucher. It was for a kick start mentorship. I sent Clover off to be assessed and the assessor, Emma Cameron loved it! She helped me develop the story and the rest is history.

I loved the whole process of bringing this story to publication. Although towards the end it was both exciting and bittersweet as Emma M and I knew we were getting closer to having our book baby published, but we also knew it would be the end of our partnership for this project.

Peter and Kathy Creamer were dream publishers to work with. They allowed Emma and I to just run with our ideas and were very supportive of every step.

What does Clover’s BIG Ideas offer the reader that differs from others covering similar subjects?
Clover’s BIG Ideas invites the reader into a world of gentle story-telling and demonstrates that looks are not always what they seem. Clover’s BIG Ideas celebrates friendship and instils the importance of understanding and acceptance.

Lulu is a bear with a creative soul needing to be expressed, so she moves from her icy lands to the big city lights. Here she is right at home dancing and singing and being adored by her fans until she realises how much she misses her friends back home. Luckily they know just what to do.

Written in rhyme that doesn’t miss a beat and beautifully illustrated, this adorable bear shows that you can have it all if only you reach for it.
