Nursery rhymes are ever popular, and this in-house offering contains over 60 rhymes which have been grouped into sections, following the segments of the day and what takes place. Some are old favourites; others not so well known.

Emma Stuart has given her illustrations a distinctive Aussie flavour by portraying cute bush animals as well as the traditional mice, chickens, cows etc. There is a lot of movement and action in much of her work, and a great mix of mediaeval and modern. I found the bush animals particularly adorable, especially the fluffy-eared koalas. But to see the mulberry bush covered in gumnuts instead was a little disconcerting, and some of the traditional wording such as in Jack and Jill has been changed.

Nevertheless, it is a very atmospheric and fun book and breathes new life into an old subject which small children will love. Many of the action words have been highlighted and printed in a curve for extra emphasis. An index at the back is handy so that the reader can return time and again with ease to a favourite rhyme.

Children love repetition and are sure to learn many of the rhymes by heart.
