I loved everything about this book and read it in two
sittings. It was so easy to read, and I loved all the characters Webster
created. Tully has a lot going on with an absent dad, an even more absent mum, a trying-hard stepmum, and an annoying but caring brother. The teenage girl
friendship drama was totally relatable. Having a teenage daughter AND working
in a high school, I can tell you that Webster nailed the "frenemy"
interactions! High school is such a dynamic and complex environment, and while
Tully tries to navigate it, she soon starts to jeopardise the real friendship
in place of the questionable one.
Webster writes with a direct style that both
entertains the reader and allows the story to flow smoothly. Her gift in Selfie is the authenticity within her writing to represent the target audience of this novel. It doesn’t matter the age of the reader; teens and adults alike will be able to relate to the storyline in some way, either directly or
indirectly.
What I enjoyed most was the slow evolution of both Tully and Dene and their
realisation that being popular and "liked" should not be the goal.
Real friendships are hard to come by and should be valued and
appreciated when they do. Also, that self-worth should not be judged by the
number of online hearts received.
Thank you for writing such a relevant and topical book, Allayne. It's so good! Selfie has quick and easy-to-read chapters and is suitable for a 10+ year readership.
