Wave Atlas by Sarah Zambello, illustrated by Susy Zanella (Thames and Hudson Australia) HB RRP $34.99 ISBN 9781760744524

This book is
highly readable for young (and older) readers and, as its sub-title says,
contains everything you need to know about waves. It includes information such
as how oceanographers measure wave motion, currents, and tides, how oceans form
(and are measured), and much more. Numerous pages are dedicated to the Douglas
Sea Scale, which measures waves in the wind (from glassy to phenomenal) and the
swell of the sea (from no swell to confused where wavelength and height are
indefinable).
The text
references books (The Old Man and the Sea), poems (‘The Rime of the Ancient
Mariner’), illustrations (The Big Sea), and even legends (the Flying Dutchman).
It tells how the Bajau people of the Pacific Ocean’s Coral Triangle have made
their homes on the sea: they are sometimes called sea mariners. It seems no
detail about waves has been excluded!
The
illustrations are captivating, too. The first double-page spread shows the six
oceans on a map of the world. Given the book is about a single topic – waves –
the illustrator has managed, mostly in blues and greens, to produce interesting
spreads, some of which include labels (for example, showing the water cycle, ie
transpiration, evaporation, and infiltration, etc.)
The book is
completed with a glossary, notes, and a bibliography.
This non-fiction
picture book is highly recommended for readers from 12+ years to adults.
