Diary of a Future Billionaire by Pamela Buchart, illustrated by Motto, (Scholastic) PB ISBN 978176147741
Ben plans to become the world’s youngest billionaire –
and he’s only ten years old. He lives with Mum, Dad, and baby Angel in a rented
home, and things are grim. Dad has lost the family’s life savings by buying a
mongoose farm, which turned out to be a scam, and Mum, who is writing a novel, is
ropeable. Ben takes it on himself to make money to help pay the rent as the
family is threatened with eviction if a thousand pounds are not paid by the end
of the month.
With the help of his friends Bilal and April May, Ben starts
selling cheap pizzas, first at school and then at other venues, including at an
auction house. Throughout his business dealings, he is inspired and assisted by
‘The Tank,’ a television personality who is a billionaire who has written a book
about how to succeed in becoming wealthy.
This 215-page book for middle-grade readers is
fast-paced. It has cartoon black-and-white illustrations on every page (sometimes
as many as three illustrations). Words are frequently highlighted in bold to
make the book look child-friendly.
