The King’s Conservatorium

The King’s Conservatorium
by Emma Cameron (Wombat Books) Junior Fiction Novel RRP AU$16.99 ISBN 97819761112270

Garlan and Cadell are brothers. Garlan is very protective of Cadell who is mute. The brothers become orphaned and go to live with a farmer and his wife. The farmer is kind and caring, the wife is nasty and cruel. The boys are forced to flee and together they begin a journey into the unknown.

The brothers dream of a time their parents told them about, a world where there was singing and music. Now, all such things are banished from the kingdom of Elatha where they live. They’ve heard of a kingdom on the other side of the border of the great wall where you can sing and play music without being persecuted. Thus, they begin a perilous journey, always being pursued by the King’s Guards. But even if they get to the other side, what will they find? Are the stories true? And will they be able to stay together?

This is a junior fiction historical fantasy novel of 174 pages. It moves along at a gentle pace using simple language. The story takes the reader on a journey of brotherly love and selflessness, of having to grow-up quickly in an adult world without the guidance of a loving parent. On their travels, the boys are met with mostly the kindness and generosity of strangers but with a good twist at the end.

This book is available in print, ebook and audiobook and is likely to appeal to lovers of fantasy.
