My First Book of Zen

My First Book of Zen

Heartened by notes featuring Zen wisdom that their mother leaves everywhere for them, two children discover the miracle of mindfulness during the year. Through periods of purposeful presence, they are able to reflect on what it means to be kind, compassionate, joyful and giving, as well as how to connect not just to each other but also to the world around them.

Tracy Gallup’s text is longer than what is usually found in a picture book, but the words entwine enlightenment and harmony into plump passages of hope. The ‘notes’ are actually inspirational quotes from world-renowned thinkers – among them the Dalai Lama, Shunryu Suzuki and Thich Nhat Hanh – ensuring that five- to nine-year-olds are left with plenty to ponder as they turn the last page.

Muted watercolours create a soothing mood across Tracy’s illustrations, mirroring the moments of thoughtful tranquillity in the text. Her love of the natural world is clear with captivating portrayals of delicate cherry blossoms, a sizeable stick insect, dynamic autumn leaves and a magical moon.

Serene and uplifting, My First Book of Zen is brimming with beautiful ideas for a calm and contemplative existence. Curious children are encouraged to explore Zen philosophy and apply the gentle teachings to their own life.
